Replacing a hydraulic pump: what information should you provide?

A clear model code is the best starting point for identifying a replacement hydraulic pump. When the code is incomplete, photographs and installation details help establish what needs to be checked before a replacement is proposed.

Photograph the nameplate and the installed pump

Send a sharp, straight-on image of the entire nameplate, including every suffix and series number. Add views of the shaft, mounting flange, hydraulic connections and any control devices. Include the machine manufacturer and model when known.

Record the mechanical connections

  • Mounting standard, flange dimensions, pilot diameter and bolt pattern.
  • Shaft type, diameter and usable length; identify the key or spline where applicable.
  • Drive speed and rotation direction, stating the viewing reference.
  • Port locations, thread or flange type and connection sizes.

Rotation conventions must be checked against the manufacturer’s drawing. A pump that physically fits is not necessarily compatible with the drive and hydraulic circuit.

Describe the hydraulic duty

Provide pump type, displacement, required flow, operating pressure and drive speed. For variable-displacement pumps, identify the control type and settings from the complete code or existing documentation.

Also specify fluid type, operating temperature, viscosity information where available, inlet conditions and any case-drain arrangement. These requirements vary by model: the permitted values for one pump series should not be transferred to another.

Explain why the pump is being replaced

Describe noise, leakage, loss of flow, pressure changes or other observed symptoms, and say whether the pump has already been removed. This gives context for selection; it does not by itself establish the cause of a failure.

A short email checklist

Send the full pump code, nameplate and installation photographs, flange and shaft details, rotation, ports, fluid, speed, pressure and required quantity. If the original model is discontinued or an alternative is proposed, compare its complete technical and dimensional specification before installation.
