How to identify a hydraulic directional valve from its nameplate and symbol

To identify a hydraulic directional valve, collect both its complete model code and hydraulic symbol. The external shape or coil voltage alone is insufficient to establish the valve’s circuit function and replacement compatibility.

Start with the full model code

Photograph the valve nameplate and record all letters, numbers, separators and suffixes. A manufacturer’s code can describe the valve family, spool arrangement, series, seal material, supply voltage, electrical connection and options. Decode it using the catalogue for that valve family and series.

Check the hydraulic symbol

Photograph the symbol on the valve or provide the machine’s hydraulic diagram. Confirm the number of ports and positions, the flow paths in each position and the neutral configuration where applicable.

For a three-position valve, the centre condition matters. Valves with a similar mounting interface may connect or block their ports differently in the neutral position. Do not select a replacement from the number of solenoids alone.

Confirm the mounting interface

Record the interface designation and mounting dimensions from the drawing. For example, the Duplomatic DS3 family uses the ISO 4401-03 interface, commonly described as CETOP 03 / NG6. This identifies the mounting family, but does not identify the spool, voltage or other execution details.

Read the coil information separately

Send a clear photograph of each coil label and connector. Record the rated voltage and whether the supply is AC or DC; include frequency for AC coils where shown. Coil information must be checked alongside the valve body code.

Provide the operating conditions

  • Working pressure, flow and any known return-line pressure.
  • Hydraulic fluid and operating temperature.
  • Required fail position, spring arrangement and manual override.
  • Electrical connector and any special execution requirements.

Maximum catalogue flow and pressure values are not a guarantee that every spool and operating condition can be combined at those limits. Selection should use the appropriate model’s operating limits and performance data.

Explore directional control valves or send the nameplate, coil labels and hydraulic symbol to IMPEX CONNECT. Include the quantity and whether an exact replacement or an alternative is required.
