HC2 tie-rod hydraulic cylinders for industrial equipment
The HC2 series converts hydraulic pressure into controlled linear movement in both directions. Its compact square heads, tie-rod construction and chrome-plated rod provide a practical basis for industrial actuation, including machine building, material handling, clamping and production equipment, subject to application verification.
Optional adjustable end cushioning reduces impact as the piston approaches the end of its stroke. Different rod diameters, seal materials and mounting arrangements allow the cylinder to be matched to the required force, speed, installation space and working fluid. For replacement projects, check the complete order code and mounting dimensions rather than bore and stroke alone.
Main technical specifications
| Manufacturer / series | Duplomatic MS / HC2, series 20 |
|---|---|
| Construction | Double-acting, square-head tie-rod hydraulic cylinder |
| Standards | ISO 6020-2; DIN 24554. Check the catalogue drawings for execution-specific dimensional exceptions. |
| Nominal operating pressure | 160 bar, continuous service |
| Maximum operating / peak pressure | 210 bar / 250 bar. Peak pressure is not a continuous operating rating. |
| Standard maximum speed | 0.5 m/s with K seals |
| Standard fluid temperature | −20 to +80 °C with K seals |
| Stroke | Up to 5000 mm in the catalogue performance table; strokes above 5000 mm require technical confirmation. |
| Fluid viscosity | 10-400 cSt; recommended 25 cSt |
| Fluid cleanliness | ISO 4406:1999 class 20/18/15 |
| Standard ports | Parallel BSP threads with seal-ring spot facing to ISO 1179; sizes depend on bore |
| Standard finish | Duplomatic matt black paint, 40 μm; chrome-plated piston rod |
Stroke selection: section 1.6 of catalogue 71 000/225 ED also describes strokes up to 6000 mm and longer strokes on request. Because this differs from the 5000 mm summary rating, confirm long-stroke feasibility for the selected bore, rod, mounting and load before ordering. Spacers are recommended for strokes above 1000 mm and increase overall cylinder length.
Available cylinder bores and piston rods
Ten bore sizes are available. Most offer three rod diameters; the 25 mm bore offers two. Rod selection affects retraction force, speed and resistance to buckling.
| Bore | Standard rod | Intermediate rod | Oversized rod |
|---|---|---|---|
| 25 | 12 | - | 18 |
| 32 | 14 | 18 | 22 |
| 40 | 18 | 22 | 28 |
| 50 | 22 | 28 | 36 |
| 63 | 28 | 36 | 45 |
| 80 | 36 | 45 | 56 |
| 100 | 45 | 56 | 70 |
| 125 | 56 | 70 | 90 |
| 160 | 70 | 90 | 110 |
| 200 | 90 | 110 | 140 |
Theoretical extension force is pressure × piston area; retraction force uses the annular area after subtracting the rod area. Actual force is lower because of friction and back pressure. Long strokes and compressive loads require a buckling check.
Available HC2 configurations and options
Rod, stroke and cushioning
- Single-rod construction or double-rod execution where compatible with the mounting.
- Standard male rod-end thread; female thread (W), light male thread (X) or light female thread (Y), according to rod size.
- No cushioning (0), front cushioning (1), rear cushioning (2), or cushioning at both ends (3).
- Adjustable cushioning without changing the cylinder’s overall dimensions.
- Front and rear air bleeders on request; alternative port positions and oversized connections subject to technical review.
- Mounting accessories and replacement seal kits selected for the bore, rod and execution.
Sensors and ATEX execution
- PNP normally open end-stroke proximity sensors from 40 mm bore, subject to mounting restrictions. Cylinders with these sensors require cushioning.
- Adjustable tie-rod-mounted magnetic sensors for 25-125 mm bores: Reed or Hall-effect PNP. Short strokes below 80 mm and mid-trunnion mountings require review.
- Magnetic sensors provide position switching; they are not a continuous precision position transducer.
- HCK2 is the separately specified ATEX 2014/34/EU execution: II 2GD without proximity sensors, or II 3GD with proximity sensors. Certification and operating limits must match the installation.
Seal options
| Code | Materials / purpose | Fluid / temperature |
|---|---|---|
| K | Nitrile + polyurethane; standard duty | Mineral oil; −20 to +80 °C |
| M | Nitrile + PTFE; low friction | Mineral oil or water-glycol; −20 to +80 °C |
| V | Viton + PTFE; high temperature / compatible special fluids | −20 to +150 °C for non-ATEX execution; verify fluid compatibility |
Minimum pressure: 10 bar for K/V and 20 bar for M; consult for lower-pressure use. Speed depends on seal type and execution. For HCK2 ATEX versions, fluid temperature with V seals is limited to +120 °C and the specified ambient range is −20 to +80 °C. Standard HC2 limits must not be applied automatically to HCK2.
14 mounting styles
Select the mounting to suit the load path and machine geometry. Pivoting and fixed mountings require different installation checks.
| Code | Mounting | Reference |
|---|---|---|
| A / B | Front flange / rear flange | ME5 / ME6 |
| C / D | Female clevis / male clevis | MP1 / MP3 |
| F | Spherical swivel | MP5 |
| G | Feet | MS2 |
| H / L / N | Front / intermediate / rear trunnion | MT1 / MT4 / MT2 |
| P / Q / R | Extended tie rods: front / rear / both ends | MX3 / MX2 / MX1 |
| T / U | Front / rear threaded mounting holes | MX5 / MX6 |
Double-rod execution is not available with B, C, D, F, N, Q or U mountings. For intermediate trunnion L, specify dimension XV. Mounting accessories and rod-end attachments must be checked against the selected load and dimensions.

HC2 hydraulic cylinders: frequently asked questions
What pressure are Duplomatic HC2 cylinders designed for?
The nominal continuous operating pressure is 160 bar. The catalogue lists 210 bar maximum operating pressure and 250 bar peak pressure. The peak value is not a continuous service rating.
Can I order a specific bore, rod diameter and stroke?
Yes. HC2 is a configurable series with ten bores from 25 to 200 mm, the listed rod combinations, and an application-specific stroke. Send the required dimensions, force, speed and operating conditions for selection. Long strokes require a rod stability and mounting check.
What is the difference between HC2 and HCK2?
HC2 identifies the industrial cylinder series. HCK2 identifies its ATEX execution, with certification and operating restrictions for the selected hazardous-area application. An ordinary HC2 cylinder should not be treated as ATEX-certified.
Can HC2 cylinders include cushioning and position sensors?
Yes. Adjustable front, rear or both-end cushioning is available. Proximity and magnetic switching sensors are optional, with different bore, mounting and execution restrictions. We check their compatibility with the requested configuration.
How do I request a replacement HC2 cylinder?
Send a clear photograph of the nameplate, the complete HC2 order code, bore, rod diameter, working stroke and mounting dimensions. A drawing or photographs of the installation help confirm the ports, rod end, cushioning and sensor arrangement.
