High-pressure industrial actuation
HC3 hydraulic cylinders for iron, steel and industrial machinery
The HC3 series provides powered linear movement in both directions for demanding industrial systems. Its construction and material selection are intended for heavy-duty applications, including the iron and steel sector. A choice of cylinder diameters and two rod sizes per bore allows the actuator to be matched to the required push and pull forces.
Optional adjustable end cushioning reduces impact near the end of travel. External rod-seal drainage, air bleeders and end-stroke proximity sensors can be specified where required. Select each execution against the actual load, fluid, temperature and mounting arrangement.
Comparing series? HC2 tie-rod cylinders offer a 160 bar nominal pressure class and 25-200 mm bores; HC3 covers a 250 bar nominal pressure class and 50-400 mm bores. Installation dimensions and mounting standards differ.

| Standard surface finish | Duplomatic matt black paint, 40 μm; chrome-plated rod |
Stroke tolerance: +1/0 mm up to 1000 mm and +4/0 mm above 1000 mm up to 5000 mm. Spacers are recommended above 1000 mm; each spacer increases overall length by 50 mm. Long-stroke selection requires checking rod buckling, load guidance and mounting geometry.
Available bores and piston rod diameters
Each bore has a reduced rod and a standard rod. Rod diameter affects retraction force, speed and compressive stability; select the combination for the actual duty.
| Bore | Reduced rod | Standard rod |
|---|---|---|
| 50 | 32 | 36 |
| 63 | 40 | 45 |
| 80 | 50 | 56 |
| 100 | 63 | 70 |
| 125 | 80 | 90 |
| 140* | 90 | 100 |
| 160 | 100 | 110 |
| 180* | 110 | 125 |
| 200 | 125 | 140 |
| 250 | 160 | 180 |
| 320 | 200 | 220 |
| 400 | 250 | 280 |
* 140 and 180 mm bores are catalogue options not covered by the ISO 6022 bore series.
Extension force depends on pressure and full piston area. Retraction force depends on the annular area after subtracting rod area. Allow for friction and back pressure, and check rod stability for compressive loads.
Five mounting styles
| Code | Mounting | Reference |
|---|---|---|
| A | Front flange | MF3 |
| B | Rear flange | MF4 |
| D | Male clevis with bushing | MP3 |
| F | Spherical swivel | MP5 |
| L | Intermediate trunnion | MT4 |
For L mounting, specify trunnion position XV. Double-rod execution is not available with B, D or F mountings. Confirm mounting dimensions and accessory load ratings for the selected cylinder.
Available executions and options
Mechanical and hydraulic options
- Single-rod or compatible double-rod execution.
- Standard male rod-end thread or optional female thread W, where listed for the selected rod diameter.
- Adjustable front (1), rear (2) or both-end (3) cushioning; execution without cushioning (0).
- Front and rear air bleeders S on request.
- Optional external rod-seal drainage E at the front; rear drainage also available for double-rod cylinders.
- Drain ports: BSP 1/8 inch up to 100 mm bore, BSP 1/4 inch for larger bores.
- Alternative port positions, oversized connections, spacers and mounting accessories, subject to selection.
End-stroke sensing
Optional PNP normally open proximity sensors provide a switching signal when the piston reaches the front or rear end of travel. Standard HC3 sensors are available at both ends across the bore range and mounting styles.
Cylinders fitted with proximity sensors require cushioning. Nominal sensor supply is 24 V DC, with a 10-30 V DC supply range. Connectors are ordered separately; ATEX versions require the appropriate connector and execution.
Sensor ratings do not increase the cylinder’s 320 bar maximum operating pressure. HCK3 sensor feasibility for 125 and 400 mm bores requires manufacturer confirmation.
Seal materials
| Code | Materials / purpose | Fluid / temperature |
|---|---|---|
| K | Nitrile + polyurethane; standard | Mineral oil; −20 to +80 °C |
| M | Nitrile + PTFE; low friction | Mineral oil / water-glycol; −20 to +80 °C |
| V | Viton + PTFE; high temperature / compatible special fluids | −20 to +150 °C for non-ATEX execution; verify fluid compatibility |
Minimum pressure: 10 bar with K/V seals or 20 bar with M seals; consult for lower-pressure use. Maximum speed depends on seal type and execution. Application limits must be checked together; individual maxima are not a guaranteed combined operating point.
HCK3 ATEX execution
HCK3 is the ATEX 2014/34/EU execution of the series. The catalogue specifies II 2GD without proximity sensors and II 3GD with proximity sensors. The ATEX declaration of conformity and operating instructions accompany this execution.
For HCK3, ambient temperature is −20 to +80 °C; fluid temperature is −20 to +80 °C with K/M seals or −20 to +120 °C with V seals. Maximum speed is 0.5 m/s with K seals or 1 m/s with M/V seals. Hazardous-area suitability must be confirmed for the installation; ordinary HC3 cylinders are not automatically ATEX-certified.
